This section of National Cycle Network Route 4 around Hilmarton is an excellent choice if you want to cycle through quieter countryside without fighting traffic.
You'll ride along a combination of quiet lanes and dedicated paths, taking you through rolling farmland with views across open fields and past traditional farmsteads. It's the kind of landscape that feels genuinely English without being dramatic – gentle hills rather than the steeper terrain you'll find further north in the Cotswolds.
The real pleasure here is the journey itself. As you pedal through, you'll notice small ancient churches scattered across the villages, and it's worth stopping to look around them. Places like Hilmarton itself tell their own stories through their architecture and layout, giving you a sense of how rural life has worked in this part of Wiltshire for centuries. There aren't major attractions right on the route, but that's partly the appeal – it feels like proper countryside rather than a curated tourist trail.
Once you've finished riding, Calne is nearby for a quick stop to eat or drink something. If you need more facilities or want to explore further, Chippenham is slightly further away and has considerably more to offer. Royal Wootton Bassett is also within reach if you're heading that direction. The whole area works well as a half or full day out on a bike.
