Penn Wood Nature Reserve

The appeal is really quite simple: a well-maintained network of footpaths winds through different woodland sections, accessible enough for various fitness levels, but demanding little else of you.

The main draw is the walking itself. As you move deeper into the reserve, you'll notice how the woodland transforms seasonally. Spring brings wildflowers across the forest floor and fresh growth, while autumn turns everything warm gold and rust. If you're patient and quiet, you're likely to spot common woodland birds and other wildlife going about their business.

There's no visitor centre or facilities here, and that's intentional. You come to walk, listen to the woodland sounds, and let your thinking slow down. It's the kind of place where time feels different from busier attractions. The reserve sits close enough to Compton Bassett for easy access, and it's conveniently positioned if you're visiting nearby market towns like Calne or Devizes. You could easily spend a couple of hours walking here, then head into town afterwards for lunch or a browse through local shops, combining the best of both: woodland peace and market town character.
