If you're after a proper walk through exceptional trees, this place really delivers.
You'll find a world-class collection spread across 600 acres, managed by Forestry England and holding around 15,000 specimens from all over the globe. What makes it worth returning to is that there's genuine visual interest throughout the year, not just when the leaves turn.
The experience splits into two quite different areas. The Old Arboretum features wide, formal avenues lined with individual specimen trees that really command attention, perfect for a leisurely stroll where you can take your time. Silk Wood feels altogether different, like genuine ancient woodland with narrower, winding paths that give you a real sense of wandering through something wild. The Treetop Walkway is definitely worth seeking out; it takes you high into the canopy and completely transforms how you experience the forest.
The collection emphasises maples, which means you get interesting foliage and compelling shapes across every season. Robert Holford started planting here back in the mid-19th century, and the place has maintained that commitment to conservation and education right through to today.
It's conveniently positioned near Tetbury and Malmesbury, making it an excellent day trip from either town. Cirencester and Bath are also within easy reach if you're basing yourself there. There are cafes on-site and decent parking, though it's worth checking their website before visiting, especially at busy times, as advance booking is sometimes required.
