This world-renowned arboretum, managed by Forestry England, makes for a genuinely rewarding day out if you enjoy trees and woodland exploration.

You'll find specimens from every temperate region across the globe — it really is like walking through a living library of international forestry.

The experience splits into two quite different areas. The Old Arboretum contains many of the original grand trees planted over successive generations, arranged in a more formal layout that reflects its heritage. Silk Wood offers something altogether different — a wilder, less manicured feel with native character and winding paths that give you more freedom to wander. The treetop walkway stands out as genuinely special, offering a view of the forest canopy from above that you won't get anywhere else.

The collection changes dramatically with the seasons. Spring brings abundant blossom, summer delivers full green canopy, and autumn becomes quite busy thanks to the colour display. The arboretum dates back to the mid-19th century when Robert Stayner Holford began assembling this collection and establishing the grounds you visit today.

Practically speaking, there are accessible paths throughout, a visitor centre, and a café for breaks. Tetbury is just a short drive away if you want to add some market town exploration to your visit, while Malmesbury and Cirencester are also easily reachable if you're planning a longer day out in the area.
