One of the world's finest collections of trees lives at the National Arboretum at Westonbirt, an expansive estate that brings together remarkable specimens and shrubs from across the globe.
The walking here really is excellent—there's a proper network of paths suited to everything from gentle strolls to more challenging walks, each offering different perspectives through the botanical collection. The Treetop Walkway deserves a visit, giving you views from high in the canopy that you simply won't find at ground level.
The arboretum exists because of Robert Holford, a Victorian with genuine botanical passion who transformed this landscape into something extraordinary. The Holford pine stands as a living link to that original vision and the person who made it all possible. Any season works well here, though autumn brings particular colour and drama. You'll find something rewarding whether you're here with a camera, bringing children for an unhurried day out, or seeking a peaceful walk surrounded by nature.
The market town of Tetbury sits just a short drive away and has some good independent shops and restaurants if you want a break. Malmesbury, another historic town centred around its impressive abbey, is equally accessible, so this location works well as part of a broader exploration of the wider area.
