A Neolithic long barrow built by early farming communities over 5,000 years ago, this earthwork predates everything else in the Cotswolds—the castles, the cathedrals, everything.

It's one of the region's most direct connections to its ancient past, a communal burial mound shaped into the rolling countryside that still bears witness to the people who first transformed this landscape.

Walking around the mound can be quite moving. You have the space to contemplate the rituals and lives of those buried there, absorbing the sheer weight of history at your own pace. The views across the fields from this vantage point are remarkable, stretching far out across the countryside. There are no facilities on site, which keeps things authentic—it's the monument itself and its surroundings, nothing more.

The barrow sits near the village of Leighterton, a small and quiet settlement. When you want to eat or pick up supplies, Tetbury is just a short drive away. That market town has everything you might need—cafes, restaurants, and shops—and makes a good base for exploring more of the Southern Cotswolds while you're in the area.
