This hilltop site near Honeystreet in the North Wessex Downs holds the remains of human settlement stretching back thousands of years.

The most striking feature is a Neolithic long barrow at the summit, ranking among the area's most important prehistoric monuments. While the Romans didn't build a military installation here, the surrounding Vale of Pewsey tells a compelling story of their presence—excavations have revealed villas and settlements dotted across the landscape, demonstrating how the fertile terrain attracted Roman settlers alongside the communities who inhabited it before and after.

Walking among the earthworks of the long barrow itself gives you a tangible connection to the Neolithic builders who raised it. The remains are visible enough to convey a genuine sense of the people and effort involved. The site works best as a walking destination, combining real historical substance with views across the wider countryside. Public footpaths provide straightforward access, and reaching the hilltop feels like a proper achievement once you're there.

The Barge Inn at Honeystreet by the canal makes an easy post-visit stop for refreshments and a rest. Both Devizes and Marlborough are nearby if you want to extend your day with visits to other heritage attractions across the region.
