This Georgian waterway was engineered in the 1700s to connect Bristol with London via the Thames, serving as a crucial transport route until it fell into disrepair. Volunteers spent decades restoring it, and the canal reopened fully in 1990, transforming it into a peaceful walking and cycling destination.

The path itself is wonderfully accessible, staying flat for most of its length, so it works whether you fancy a short stroll from nearby Lockeridge or a more substantial day out. As you walk, you'll see narrowboats moving through the locks and under bridges, and the canal brings plenty of wildlife—swans, kingfishers, and other birds are regular sightings along the water. The surrounding countryside is genuinely tranquil, offering a marked contrast to busier parts of the region.

If you need to stock up on supplies or fancy a proper meal, Marlborough is just a short drive away and serves as a useful base with its shops, restaurants, and market town atmosphere. The canal sits on the eastern edge of the wider Cotswolds area, so it's easy to combine with other local attractions. It's the sort of place that appeals equally to serious walkers looking for a longer route and families wanting a gentle, meandering afternoon by the water.
