The Devil's Den

A short drive east of Marlborough takes you to The Devil's Den, an ancient Neolithic burial chamber that dates back thousands of years.

Despite its dramatic name, this is genuine prehistoric architecture, not a Roman site. The monument consists of several enormous sarsen stones arranged in a distinctive formation: two upright stones support a massive capstone that creates an almost table-like structure, with a third upright nearby suggesting what was once a larger burial complex before time took its toll.

What makes this place special is how accessible it feels. You can walk right up to the stones and spend time observing the raw engineering skill of these early inhabitants without barriers or visitor infrastructure getting in the way. There's no visitor centre or scheduled activities here, which means the real experience comes from standing among these ancient rocks in a quiet rural setting, reflecting on human history stretching back millennia, or simply capturing striking photographs of the stones against the open countryside.

It works well as part of a broader exploration of Wiltshire's prehistoric monuments. Because it's only a short drive from the market town of Marlborough, you can easily combine a visit with time spent wandering the town's notably wide high street, which is lined with independent shops and cafes where you can relax and eat afterwards.
