Hungerford Town Council

in Hungerford

This welcoming market town sits on the River Kennet and the Kennet and Avon Canal, offering a genuine sense of history alongside plenty of contemporary appeal.

It's a natural stopping point when you're exploring the wider Cotswolds, and it has earned a strong reputation among antique hunters, with numerous shops and arcades scattered along the historic High Street where you can browse for all sorts of interesting pieces.

Beyond the shops, there's plenty to do outdoors. You can take peaceful walks along the canal towpath, watch the narrowboats pass by, or explore the common land that surrounds the town. The place has some distinctive heritage too—it holds ancient common rights that date back to John of Gaunt in the 14th century, still managed today by the Town & Manor of Hungerford. If you're here in spring, you might catch the annual Hocktide festivities, a colourful traditional event that celebrates these long-standing rights and is quite unlike anything else you'll find elsewhere.

If you need larger shops or want to venture further afield, Newbury is just a short drive to the east, while the historic market town of Marlborough sits to the west. This makes the town work well as a base for exploring the surrounding region more widely.
