Highway Penning is a small hamlet scattered across the rolling hills at the southern edge of the Cotswolds, where the pace of life feels genuinely unhurried.
You'll find traditional stone cottages here, often draped with climbing roses during summer months, set among open fields and woodlands. There are no shops or major attractions, which is very much the point—this is a place that rewards you for slowing down and paying attention to the quiet countryside around you.
The real appeal lies in exploring on foot. The lanes threading through the hamlet and surrounding landscape are perfect for gentle walks, offering expansive views across fields and trees where you might catch sight of local wildlife. Historically, like so many settlements in these parts, Highway Penning's existence has been rooted in farming and agricultural life for centuries, and that connection to the land still shapes the character of the place today.
If you want to grab food or stock up on supplies, Royal Wootton Bassett lies just a short drive south and offers shops and pubs. To the west, Malmesbury is equally close and makes a good base for exploring the area—it's known for its impressive abbey and considerable history. Highway Penning works best as a peaceful walking stop or a quiet starting point for exploring this less crowded corner of the region.
