Bupton sits on the northern edge of the Cotswolds, just across the border into Wiltshire near Royal Wootton Bassett.

Archaeologists have identified this as a Roman site, with evidence of activity dating back nearly two thousand years. Don't expect dramatic ruins here—the Roman presence is quieter than that, scattered across the landscape in smaller finds rather than imposing structures. What draws people here is something more subtle: the chance to walk through fields and countryside that were once part of a thriving Roman world. There's a real sense of history when you're standing in a place where people were living and working two millennia ago, part of an empire that left such a lasting mark on Britain. If you're keen on Romano-British history but don't need your archaeology spelled out in towering monuments, it's worth the visit. The walking itself is genuinely pleasant, and Royal Wootton Bassett is close enough if you need to pick up supplies or fancy exploring the wider area. It's the kind of place that rewards curiosity and a bit of imagination about what once stood here.
