This walking route connects two villages in the heart of the Cotswolds, following paths that inspired composer Gustav Holst during his time in the area.
The walk takes you through countryside that clearly drew him here—rolling hills, stone villages, and quiet valleys that genuinely feel separated from everyday life.
Lower Slaughter is worth spending time in, with its stream running through the village center and honey-colored stone cottages along the water. It has the kind of unspoilt character many visitors come to the Cotswolds hoping to find, though it does attract crowds during peak season. From here you can continue to Guiting Power and Wyck Rissington, both active villages rather than showpiece destinations, which means they've kept their real local feel.
The walk itself is fairly gentle and suits most fitness levels, winding through farmland and woodland. It's the sort of route where you start noticing details—dry stone walls, the birds around you, the way the landscape shifts subtly between settlements. Plan for a few hours depending on your pace and how often you stop to look around. Bourton-on-the-Water, the nearest town with proper facilities, sits about three miles away. Spring and autumn work particularly well for this walk, when the weather's more comfortable and you're less likely to be sharing the path with crowds.
