Great Somerford

This working village sits in rural Wiltshire within the Dauntsey Vale, a few miles southeast of Malmesbury.

The River Avon runs along its northeastern edge, having shaped both the landscape and parish boundaries for centuries in ways that are still visible today.

Great Somerford itself is compact but genuinely appealing in its quietness. It's remained an agricultural community at heart, with traditional stone buildings dotted throughout. The Church of St Mary rewards a visit if you're interested in local history, and the surrounding countryside offers excellent walking, particularly along the river valley where paths trace the Avon's meanders through the landscape.

The parish extends beyond the main village into nearby hamlets like Startley and the open spaces of Seagry Heath, giving you room to explore without feeling confined. Walking here, you'll come across old footbridges and realize how the landscape has been quietly shaped by generations of people living and working on the land.

Just five kilometres from Malmesbury and around twenty from Swindon, Great Somerford works well as a peaceful base for exploring the broader Cotswolds region. It's also a gentle stop if you're driving through Wiltshire and want to step out for an hour or two to stretch your legs and get a sense of how these rural communities actually function.
