Cleverton is a small hamlet in rolling countryside just east of Malmesbury, part of the civil parish that includes the larger village of Lea and Garsdon.
It's the kind of place you drift through rather than plan a trip around, which is precisely what makes it appealing if you're after genuine rural Wiltshire away from the usual tourist routes.
Two waterways define the landscape here—the Charlton Stream and Woodbridge Brook—carving out valleys and keeping the area lush throughout the year. Walking along these streams is easy and rewarding, taking you through farmland and past old stone buildings that reflect centuries of agricultural settlement. The B4042 passes nearby, so it's accessible from the Swindon-Malmesbury corridor if you're exploring that wider region.
What you encounter is countryside that feels actively lived in rather than carefully curated. There's no visitor infrastructure, but locals and walkers value it for exactly that reason. The hamlet belongs to a parish with an interesting story—Garsdon only joined the civil parish in 1934—so there's administrative history woven into these small communities.
It works well as a stopping point on a longer Cotswolds walking route, or if you're based in nearby Malmesbury and want to slip into quieter country for an afternoon without going far.
