Head to the northern Cotswolds and you'll discover a town that feels immediately welcoming, built around a long main street where honey-coloured stone buildings line both sides.

At its centre stands the Market Hall, a striking 17th-century structure that speaks to the town's prosperous past as a wool trading centre. The wealth generated from that trade is evident in St James', the grand church that dominates the streetscape.

Beyond its commercial history, this place became a significant hub for the Arts and Crafts movement, attracting skilled artisans who were drawn to the area's character and community. Today, it's a good spot for a leisurely walk along the main street, where you can browse independent shops or settle into one of the local pubs and cafes for refreshment. The Cotswold Way long-distance path runs close by if you fancy a longer walk into the surrounding countryside.

The Frank & Adeline Mottershead Tourist Information Centre is genuinely useful for picking up maps, local knowledge, and walking route suggestions. The town works well as a base for exploring the wider region. Broadway is just a short drive away, while Moreton-in-Marsh and Stow-on-the-Wold are also easily accessible, giving you plenty of options for day trips or onward exploration.
