Fosse Way

in Rodmarton

You can walk along one of Roman Britain's most important roads here, near the village of Rodmarton.

The Fosse Way connected Exeter to Lincoln, and for a time it marked the western edge of Roman-controlled territory. It's an impressive feat of ancient engineering that shaped the landscape in ways we still feel today.

These days it's mostly a modern road following the original Roman route, but if you pay attention to where you're walking, the history becomes real. You're treading the same ground where legions marched, merchants traded goods, and officials travelled across the province nearly two thousand years ago. It's a quieter way to experience Roman heritage than the busier archaeological sites elsewhere.

The walk itself is unassuming compared to major Roman monuments, which is part of its appeal. Rodmarton is a small, pleasant Cotswold village worth exploring if you're in the area. If you want to understand more about what life was actually like in Roman times, Cirencester lies just north of here. It was once Corinium Dobunnorum, a significant Roman town, and it has an excellent museum plus the remains of an amphitheatre. The market town of Tetbury to the south offers more shops and services if you need them. Walking this stretch of the Fosse Way connects you to a thread of history running through the entire Cotswold countryside.
