This Oxfordshire village sits just a few miles north of Witney and works well as a straightforward stop if you're exploring the central Cotswolds.

The real reason to visit is Eynsham Hall, a substantial limestone mansion now operating as a hotel and country club, with grounds open to visitors.

The hall dates from the 1770s but was substantially rebuilt in the early 20th century by celebrated architect Ernest George, who gave it much of its present character. It's a three-storey building with genuine presence, surrounded by considerable parkland and formal terraced gardens that speak to its grander past. The outbuildings are worth a look too—several are listed structures, including a former game larder, reminders of when this was an active country estate used for hunting parties.

During World War II the hall took on different work as a maternity hospital rest and recovery centre, later becoming a police training facility. That working history means it feels less like a museum and more like a building that's genuinely been lived in and used over time.

The village itself is modest but pleasant, with easy access to Witney if you need more amenities or facilities. This is somewhere that rewards taking your time with a leisurely walk rather than a quick dash through, particularly if you can explore the grounds on a clear day when the parkland really opens up.
