Bean field, near Draycot Foliat There is a large crop of broad beans in this field. The plants are getting on for 1.5 metres high. The farmer doesn't seem to have had the same problems with slugs as I've had with my runner beans.

Draycot Foliat is a small hamlet tucked between the market towns of Swindon and Marlborough in Wiltshire.

You could easily drive straight through without noticing you've arrived, but that would mean missing out on a place with genuine character worth exploring at a slower pace.

The hamlet centers around a working village with St. Michael and All Angels, a Grade II* listed church that stretches back centuries and tells the story of the area's long history. If you're interested in rural ecclesiastical architecture, the church is well worth a visit, and the churchyard itself provides a peaceful spot to sit quietly for a while. The landscape around it is typical Wiltshire chalk downland—rolling, open, and perfect for walks if you want to venture beyond the village boundaries.

This is genuinely quiet territory, which suits visitors looking for peaceful retreat rather than structured attractions. Marlborough lies about seven miles away and offers shops, pubs, and restaurants when you need them. Swindon is equally accessible if you're after larger facilities or a wider range of dining choices.

The real appeal here is experiencing the English countryside in its authentic, undeveloped form—where you can get a sense of actual rural life without the usual tourist apparatus. It's somewhere that rewards those who prefer understated landscapes and genuine community over packaged experiences.
