Just south of the main Cotswolds area, near the village of Chiseldon, you'll find a site with layers of history stretching back millennia.
This prominent hill once served as an Iron Age hillfort, a significant settlement evidenced by the impressive earthworks of ramparts and ditches that you can still clearly see today. It's a fascinating place to wander and connect with ancient times, imagining life within its protective boundaries.
Fast forward many centuries, and this same spot took on a very different military role. During the First World War, it became a substantial cavalry camp and remount depot, a bustling hub for horses and soldiers. Later, in the Second World War, American forces were stationed here, adding another chapter to its varied past. Today, while much of the area is farmland, public footpaths criss-cross the site, allowing you to explore the surviving earthworks and enjoy the expansive views across the landscape. It's a quieter experience now, but the echoes of its past are palpable. The larger town of Swindon is just a short drive away, offering all amenities, and you're well-placed to explore other Cotswolds attractions further north.
