When exploring the eastern fringes of the Cotswolds, you'll find Mildenhall offers something quite distinctive: the chance to walk an actual Roman road.

Built nearly two thousand years ago, this route stands as a reminder of Roman engineering and the vast network that once connected settlements across Britain. You won't find a pristine paved surface here, but rather the trace of the path itself, still visible in the landscape as gentle rises and lines running through fields and countryside.

Much of the route now forms public footpaths and bridleways, so you can experience it firsthand on foot or by bike. Following these ancient ways gives you a real sense of the infrastructure that once moved legionaries and traders across the region, and there's something quite moving about treading the same ground they did. The walk is contemplative in nature, and the surrounding countryside offers genuine Cotswolds landscapes worth taking time over.

Mildenhall itself is a quiet village, so if you want more amenities or somewhere to stop for a meal or coffee, Marlborough is just a short drive away. The market town has a characterful wide high street lined with independent shops and cafes, making it an excellent base if you're planning to spend time properly exploring the area.
