This overflow car park provides useful extra parking for Coate Water Country Park when the main lot fills up during busy periods.
It's only a short walk from the park entrance, so getting to the reserve with bags or children won't involve a long trek.
Coate Water itself is definitely worth spending time at. Built in the 1820s to supply water to the Wilts & Berks Canal, the lake has evolved into an important nature reserve that attracts serious birdwatchers. The walking routes around the water offer something for everyone, whether you prefer a gentle stroll or a longer walk. You'll see various waterfowl throughout the year, and despite being just outside Swindon, there's a genuine sense of calm here. The lake also has a distinctive historic diving platform, a striking structure that's become quite a local landmark.
The park suits families well, with a play area on site, and plenty of people come simply to sit by the water with a coffee and relax. Technically on the eastern edge of the Cotswolds, it genuinely feels like countryside escape rather than suburban fringe. From Hodson village, it's straightforward to reach, making it accessible whether you're a local grabbing a quick break or a visitor wanting to experience the area's natural character away from the main attractions.
