Chequers

Illustration — photo coming soon

This small hamlet sits about three miles north of Tetbury in Gloucestershire, spread across rolling countryside as a collection of stone cottages and farmland rather than a concentrated village.

There's no real center here—just scattered dwellings and working agricultural land that gives the place a genuinely rural character.

The main reason to visit is the landscape and what it offers on foot. Footpaths crisscross the surrounding fields and pass working farms, making it excellent walking territory in all directions. As part of the wider Cotswolds network, Chequers serves well as either a starting point for longer rambles or a waypoint on a broader route. The nearby village of Avening, a short walk away, has a church and basic facilities if you want a cup of tea or supplies.

Historically, the area is notable for its proximity to Gatcombe Park, home to the Princess Royal. Though the estate isn't open to visitors, it shapes the character of the place. What you see here is the working Cotswolds—farms and fields that actually sustain the region rather than the more polished village centers that draw crowds.

Come if you want to understand how people actually live in this part of the world, away from the better-known spots. Tetbury, your nearest town for proper shops and restaurants, is just a short drive south.
