The Glevum Way is a 26-mile circular walking route that loops around Gloucester, taking you through countryside, woodlands, and sections of the Cotswolds that rarely see tourist crowds.

Named after the Roman fort that once occupied this spot, walking the route gives you a real understanding of how the city connects to its surrounding landscape.

You can tackle the whole thing over several days, or break it into manageable sections depending on what suits you. The trail is clearly marked throughout, and you'll pass a good number of historical landmarks spanning from Roman times through to medieval villages. Some stretches are easy and relatively flat, while others climb properly and reward you with expansive views. Symonds Yat and the riverside sections are particularly worth the extra effort.

The route takes you past farms and villages, along the River Severn, and through a real mix of terrain. It's more of a serious walk than a casual stroll, but locals are devoted to it for good reason. If you're staying in Cheltenham or Tewkesbury, the Glevum Way is straightforward to reach, and you can join at various points rather than committing to the full loop.

Gloucester itself deserves time too. It's a working cathedral city with genuine historical roots stretching back to Roman times, and the restored docks area has become a pleasant spot for exploring shops and restaurants.
