Calne Castle Rediscovered

in Calne

This medieval fortress site gives you a genuine sense of stepping back into ancient history.

Rather than a standing castle, what remains here are the substantial earthwork defences that tell the story of a once-formidable stronghold. The most striking feature is the motte, the raised mound that originally supported the castle's main tower, surrounded by the bailey where other buildings would have clustered.

Walking across the grounds, the outlines of former structures become apparent, and you can easily imagine the castle during its heyday when the Bishops of Salisbury controlled this strategic stronghold. The site met a violent end in the 12th century during the Anarchy, the civil conflict that fundamentally altered English history. The destruction was so complete that stone remains are scarce, leaving the earthworks as the primary evidence of what once stood here.

This is a rewarding spot if you enjoy contemplating real history and appreciate a peaceful walk through countryside. The elevated position offers good views across the surrounding landscape. You'll find the site just outside Calne, a working market town with shops and places to eat. Chippenham is nearby, and the remarkable prehistoric monuments at Avebury are also accessible, making this a worthwhile stop if you're exploring this corner of the Cotswolds.
