This historic market town in Wiltshire sits on the southeastern edge of the Cotswolds, with a character quite distinct from what you'll find in the better-known parts of the region.

The town centre still revolves around its Market Cross and St Mary's Church, both substantial buildings that reflect its former importance as a trading hub. The River Marden flows through, adding a quiet natural element to the streetscape.

What really sets Calne apart is its industrial heritage, particularly its long association with pork processing and the C & T Harris brand that became well-known across the country. The Calne Heritage Centre explores this story well, alongside broader local history, and it's genuinely worth spending an hour there if you want to understand how the town came to be. The surrounding countryside offers good walking opportunities, with the North Wessex Downs just beyond the town boundaries and readily accessible for exploring on foot.

The town makes a practical base too. Avebury's ancient stone circle is only a short drive away, and if you need larger shops or more amenities, Chippenham and Marlborough are both straightforward to reach. It's one of those places where you get a real sense of how these communities tick, rather than simply passing through on the way to somewhere else.
