If you're after some good cycling on the eastern edge of the Cotswolds, the area around Botley and Cumnor—just west of Oxford—is an excellent place to start.

2.8 km 9 min easy

It's got everything you need for a relaxed afternoon ride or the beginning of something longer into Oxfordshire.

The landscape here rolls gently, with easy ups and downs that give you a decent workout without being punishing. The quiet country lanes connect smoothly from suburban Botley through to the more open countryside around Cumnor, and you'll pass through farmland and small woodlands as you go. The views begin to hint at the broader Cotswold terrain spreading out to the west.

Cumnor village is worth stopping for. It has real history attached to it—the village was home to Cumnor Place, which became infamous after Amy Robsart, wife of Robert Dudley (Queen Elizabeth I's favourite), died there in mysterious circumstances in 1560. The original house is long gone, but St Michael's Church still stands and is worth exploring. The village itself has kept its character well.

Being so close to Oxford is a major advantage. You've got easy access to facilities and transport connections, plus it puts you in a great position to ride further afield. If you want to explore more widely, you can push towards Witney or head for classic Cotswold towns like Burford.
