Bagbarn is an independent boutique just outside Gloucester that's worth a stop if you're exploring the western edge of the Cotswolds.
The shop stocks a carefully chosen range of items with genuine character, and it serves as a practical base for discovering both the city and the surrounding region.
Gloucester itself is absolutely worth spending a few hours in. The cathedral is genuinely impressive, and the Victorian Docks have real energy to them—good for a wander with plenty of cafes and shops nearby. If Roman history interests you, there's quite a bit to explore from when Gloucester was an important garrison town. You can easily mix historical sightseeing with browsing modern retailers.
From this location, you're well-positioned to venture into the quieter Cotswolds towns nearby. Painswick is only a short drive away and features a stunning Rococo Garden alongside a churchyard filled with ancient yew trees that give the place genuine character. If local food matters to you, Stroud's farmers' market is excellent and speaks to the area's strong independent food culture.
The countryside around this part of the Cotswolds is genuinely lovely without feeling crowded, and there's a good balance between finding independent shops and having proper access to towns with real amenities. It works well as a stopping point if you prefer discovering things at a slower pace rather than rushing between major attractions.
