You'll find Lockeridge a quiet, small-scale sort of place: a village where the interest lies less in the settlement itself than in what sits within walking or short driving distance of it. Within roughly two miles there are five places to visit, one place to stay, one for activities and one for eating and drinking, which tells you something about the balance here. This is countryside for people who like prehistory underfoot and long views, and who don't mind a day shaped around weather, footpaths and opening times rather than a tight itinerary. If you're staying rather than passing through, Taffrail gives you a base close to everything.

A good few hours might begin with the Long Barrow, then a wander out to the Long Tom Standing Stone and on to The Devil's Den, which rewards the walk with the kind of scene you'll want to stand and look at for a while before turning back. Add a stretch of the Kennet and Avon Canal Trail if you've the legs for it, then finish at the Who'd A Thought It, which is the local answer to lunch, a pint, or both.
