Hodson sits on the wooded northern edge of the Marlborough Downs, close enough to Swindon that you can be among shops and services within minutes, yet quiet enough that the lanes feel properly rural. It's a small settlement, so most of what you'll want is scattered across the surrounding couple of miles: around fifteen places to eat and drink, five places to visit, three activity venues, a handful of places to stay and a single shop. That mix makes it a sensible base if you're walking the Chiseldon paths and Coate Water circuits by day and want somewhere to sit down properly by evening.

A good few hours might begin with coffee and something warm at Howellers Cafe, then a wander through the Richard Jefferies Museum, where the nature writer grew up and which puts the surrounding fields and downland into context. If the weather holds, take on the Coate Water Pitch & Putt Course, or give yourself longer at Broome Manor Golf Complex. Finish at The Calley Arms for a proper meal, and if you'd rather not drive home, the Holiday Inn Swindon is close by.
