Butlers Marston is a small South Warwickshire village on the fringe of the Cotswolds, the sort of place you pass through slowly and then decide to stop. There is no high street here, and that is rather the point: within about two miles you'll find six places to eat and drink, three for shopping, two activity options, two services and one visitor attraction, which is enough to fill a day without ever feeling hurried. Walkers, cyclists and anyone driving the quiet lanes between Kineton, Wellesbourne and the Fosse Way will find it a useful base, and the surrounding countryside is open, gently rolling and easy to read from a map.

For a good few hours, start with coffee or brunch at El Cafe @ The White Swan, then head out on a stretch of Shakespeare's Avon Way or pick up one of the alternative routes of the Centenary Way, both of which thread through this part of the county. Afterwards, make for Compton Verney and the Compton Verney Art Gallery, where you can browse and take your time indoors. Round the day off with a proper sit-down meal at Shukurs Brasserie before heading back to the lanes.
