This small village sits quietly in the Coln Valley, just a few miles northeast of Cirencester, and makes for a peaceful spot if you're exploring the wider Cotswolds area.
The main draw is Ablington Manor, a substantial country house dating from the late 16th century with additions made over the centuries. It's a Grade I listed building, meaning it's architecturally significant, and you can appreciate its character from the outside as you wander through the village, though it remains a private residence so access is limited.
The village itself is small and spread out, with a rural feel that reflects its Anglo-Saxon origins—the name was first recorded around 855. Walking around, you'll notice how the settlement has grown organically over time rather than being built all at once, which gives it genuine character. The surrounding landscape is really what brings people here though. You're in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, so the Coln Valley setting offers pleasant countryside walks and the chance to experience proper Cotswolds countryside without the crowds found in busier villages nearby. It pairs well with a visit to Bibury, just a short distance away, which offers more facilities and is one of the area's better-known destinations. If you want somewhere quieter to spend a few hours walking and exploring stone villages, Ablington works really well for that.
