St Martin's Church in the village of Bladon serves as the final resting place of Sir Winston Churchill and his family.
Located just outside Woodstock in Oxfordshire, this stone parish church has stood for centuries and remains a working place of worship rather than a static monument. The Spencer-Churchill graves occupy a corner of the churchyard, marked by simple headstones that reflect Churchill's own preference for understated dignity over grand commemoration.
The church itself offers a contemplative space to reflect on twentieth-century history while experiencing the building as a living community space where services continue as they have for generations. The churchyard provides a peaceful setting for paying respects, and you can easily spend time here without feeling rushed.
Woodstock, just a short walk away, makes a natural pairing with any visit. This market town was Churchill's birthplace and is home to Blenheim Palace, the country estate where he was born. You'll find local shops and cafes along the high street worth exploring, and the palace grounds themselves welcome visitors. Combining a church visit with a wander through Woodstock's streets and attractions works well as a half-day outing.
Getting there is straightforward. The location sits roughly eight miles south of Oxford and is easily reached by car or bus. The combination of the church with Woodstock's other heritage sites creates a meaningful exploration of this part of Oxfordshire's history.
