It's a lively, independent town situated in one of the region's distinct valleys, which gives it a different character from the more obviously touristy spots around here. You'll find it packed with independent shops, cafes, and artisan producers, so there's genuine pleasure in just wandering around and seeing what catches your eye. The town's wool and cloth trading heritage still comes through as you explore – you can feel that history in the streets.

From the rooms, you can walk straight out into some excellent countryside. There are proper pathways through the woodlands and up onto common land, ideal for a proper leg-stretch with good views of the rolling landscape. As a base, it's well-positioned for exploring further too. Stroud with its famous farmers' market is a short drive away, and the historic market towns of Tetbury and Cirencester are equally accessible – one's known for antiques, the other for its Roman heritage. It's a genuinely good spot for getting a real sense of this part of England.
