This circular walk takes you through the Vale of White Horse, one of Oxfordshire's most distinctive landscapes.

3.0 km 36 min easy

The route is centered around the famous chalk figure carved into the hillside above the village of Uffington, a massive horse that's been a local landmark for centuries. The walk itself is moderately challenging, offering excellent views across the surrounding countryside as you climb toward and around the figure.

From the top, you'll see rolling farmland stretching toward the Berkshire Downs, with clear days offering views that extend for miles. The area has deep historical roots — the nearby Uffington Castle, an Iron Age hillfort, sits close to the white horse and adds another layer of interest to your visit.

The walk works well as a half or full day out, depending on how leisurely you want to take it. Wantage, the nearest town of any size, lies a few miles away and has decent facilities if you need refreshments or want to explore further. The walk is popular with families and serious hikers alike, though it can get muddy after rain, so waterproof footwear is worth considering. The combination of history, landscape, and exercise makes this one of the more rewarding walks in the area.
