Chipping Norton sits in the northwest Cotswolds, about 12 miles from Banbury and 18 miles from Oxford.

With around 6,000 residents, it's a proper working market town that's substantial enough to have real amenities while still feeling genuinely lived-in rather than polished for visitors.

The market square is the heart of things, where independent shops, cafes, and restaurants give the town its character and sense of purpose. The Church of Saint Mary the Virgin dominates the square with its striking Perpendicular Gothic tower, and the interior is equally worth exploring for its architectural details.

The old wool mill on the town's edge tells an important story about the region's past. The textile trade shaped the Cotswolds for centuries, making it wealthy, and this building gives you a tangible connection to that industrial heritage. The Wednesday market still takes place in the square, continuing traditions that have anchored the town for hundreds of years.

The countryside around Chipping Norton is excellent for walking, with established paths connecting to nearby villages like Chadlington and Great Rollright. A few miles north, the Rollright Stones—a Bronze Age monument—makes for an interesting afternoon outing.

You can use the town as a base for exploring the wider region or visit for a day trip from Oxford or elsewhere in the Cotswolds. Either way, you'll experience the Cotswolds as locals know it, without the tourist crowds that larger destinations attract.
