This ancient burial mound rises from the Berkshire Downs near Ashbury, roughly fifteen minutes' drive south of Wantage.

Dating back to around 3430 BCE, it represents one of Britain's finest examples of a Neolithic chambered long barrow, belonging to a distinctive building tradition that emerged only in south-west Britain during this period.

As you approach, you'll see a grass-covered mound with a stone-built chamber entrance that archaeologists uncovered and restored during the 1960s. You can step inside the burial chamber itself, where Neolithic communities once placed their dead. The structure creates a direct link to early farming peoples who introduced agriculture from continental Europe and invested enormous effort in constructing these monumental tombs for their ancestors.

Excavations have revealed something particularly compelling about this site: it was built in two separate phases, showing how these communities adapted and periodically rebuilt their sacred spaces across generations. The place also carries layers of local legend—medieval inhabitants believed a magical blacksmith inhabited it and would shoe horses left overnight, giving rise to the name.

Location-wise, this works well alongside nearby attractions. The Ridgeway, a prehistoric trackway excellent for walking, runs close by, and villages like Ashbury itself are just a short drive away. Plan on spending twenty minutes to half an hour here, and you'll feel the weight of five thousand years of continuous human significance.
