Watts Bank Nature Reserve

This nature reserve spreads across a sweeping hillside just outside Lambourn, known throughout England for its racing stables and horse training.

It offers something different from the busier villages you'll find elsewhere in the Cotswolds—a genuine escape into open countryside where you can walk at your own pace and take in wide views across the rolling downland. The chalk grassland here feels genuinely peaceful, which is part of what makes it work so well as a walking destination.

The reserve really comes alive in spring and summer when wildflowers carpet the grassland, attracting butterflies and other wildlife. If you're interested in nature, there's plenty to see. The paths are straightforward and manageable whether you're planning something relaxed or a proper family walk. Rather than being marked by buildings or monuments, the history here is written into the land itself—the chalk grassland has been carefully preserved because of its ecological value.

Lambourn is just a short drive away if you want to explore the racing scene or find somewhere to eat afterwards. For more substantial shops and facilities, both Hungerford and Wantage are easy to reach from here, so you can easily combine a visit to the reserve with time exploring the wider area.
