Just outside Eastbury, Watts Bank is a nature reserve that gives you a genuine sense of escape without having to venture far from the Cotswolds.
The reserve protects chalk grassland that's been managed traditionally for generations, and it really does come alive during late spring and summer when the wildflowers start to flourish across the slopes.
What makes it special is how much wildlife activity you'll encounter here. The flowers attract butterflies and all sorts of insects, while birds are constantly calling from the trees and shrubs around you. If you're the type who enjoys a slow, contemplative walk and wants to watch nature going about its business, this place delivers that in spades. The views across the surrounding countryside are genuinely expansive and quite restorative to spend time in.
The reserve exists primarily for conservation work, so it's geared towards people who want to walk quietly and observe wildlife rather than somewhere with lots of structured facilities. You won't find organized activities here, but that's rather the point. A gentle stroll is exactly what the place is designed for.
If you need a tea or a bite to eat, Lambourn village is just a short drive away and has decent facilities. It's worth building into your Cotswolds visit if you're after some time in a genuinely quiet space surrounded by the local ecology and countryside views.
