Watercombe is a small hamlet in Gloucestershire that occupies one of the Cotswolds' most ecologically important landscapes.

The marshland here, formally designated as Bushley Muzzard and Brimpsfield, has been protected as a biological Site of Special Scientific Interest since 1984. This designation reflects the genuine rarity of wetland habitat in the Cotswolds, where marshes are sparse and valuable.

The site sustains an impressive variety of plant and animal species, including several plants that are uncommon elsewhere in the region. A walk through Watercombe offers something quite different from the characteristic rolling grasslands and honey-coloured stone villages found across the area. The wetland attracts birds and insects you won't encounter on the surrounding hills, and the marsh transforms noticeably through the seasons.

This is an excellent location for nature watching and quiet walks, though access can be restricted during particularly wet periods. The hamlet itself is small and rural, so you'll likely want to stay in nearby Cheltenham or Gloucester for accommodation and amenities. If you're genuinely interested in wildlife and want to step beyond the traditional Cotswolds experience, Watercombe delivers something distinctly different. Spring and early summer offer the best conditions, when marsh plants are flowering and bird activity reaches its peak.
