These formal gardens sit on the Great Lake side of Blenheim Palace's estate and offer something quite different from the rest of the grounds.
Designed by Achille Duchêne in the early 20th century, they provide a striking contrast to Capability Brown's naturalistic landscapes elsewhere on the property. The terraces take a theatrical approach, descending in multiple tiers adorned with fountains, classical statues, and ornamental ponds that culminate in a dramatic water cascade.
Walking through them gives you plenty to admire—intricate stonework and classical sculpture are everywhere, and you get sweeping views across the lake towards the Palace itself. There's something about the combination of grandeur and calm that makes it genuinely pleasant to spend time here. You can easily fit a leisurely stroll through the terraces into a day visiting the Palace rooms or exploring the wider parkland, as they're just a short walk from the main house.
Afterward, head into nearby Woodstock, which sits right at the gates of the estate. The village has some good independent shops and welcoming pubs where you can grab lunch or settle in for an evening drink. It's a natural place to wind down after a day exploring the grounds.
