The WAS Way is a walking route that takes you through the Five Valleys landscape surrounding Stroud, following the same waterways and valleys that once powered the region's cloth mills.
This walk gives you a real sense of how the industrial heritage shaped the local topography—the mills are long gone, but the valleys themselves remain beautiful and accessible on foot.
The route works well as a day trip from Stroud town centre, where you'll find independent shops, cafes, and food producers to explore before or after your walk. Because Stroud sits at the heart of these five valleys, using it as your base means you can combine time in town with time outdoors without much fuss. The walk itself offers pleasant terrain that takes advantage of the natural contours created by centuries of water use and industrial activity.
This isn't a dramatic fell walk or anything particularly challenging—it's more about experiencing the landscape at a human pace and understanding how the valleys have shaped both the history and daily life of the area. You'll get a better appreciation for why Stroud developed where it did and why locals are so committed to preserving both the environment and the community spirit.
The walk connects Stroud to surrounding villages and highlights, making it a good introduction to the wider Cotswolds if you're basing yourself here. Stroud is around 25 minutes from Gloucester and well-positioned for exploring other destinations in the region.
