Upper Pickwick is a small hamlet a few miles southwest of Chippenham, marking the southwestern edge of the Cotswolds where Wiltshire begins.

It's genuinely rural—the kind of place where stone cottages line quiet lanes rather than gathering around a village centre. The landscape has been shaped for centuries by the pale limestone quarries that still operate here today, and you can often spot golden Bath Stone being extracted if you explore the surrounding area.

What makes Upper Pickwick worth visiting is its location and setting. It sits perfectly positioned to explore Corsham, the nearby market town, which has real character and feels removed from the typical tourist circuit. Corsham Court, a 17th-century country house with impressive art collections, is just a short drive away and deserves a visit. The town itself has good independent shops and proper pubs for eating and drinking.

From here, Bath is within easy reach to the southwest, or you can head north toward the larger Cotswolds settlements. The countryside around Upper Pickwick is excellent for walking—gentle rolling hills and working farmland rather than manicured landscapes. This works well as a quiet base if you want to slow your pace and explore the less-visited corners of the region without dealing with crowds. It's the kind of place where you can actually experience what the Cotswolds feel like away from the main tourist routes.
