Top Lock Meadow sits in open countryside just outside Grove in Oxfordshire, where a working canal lock anchors this small nature reserve.
The space brings together meadowland and historic waterways in a way that naturally encourages you to slow down and take things in.
Walking the reserve, you'll see seasonal wildflowers scattered across the grassland, and if you move quietly, you might catch kingfishers darting across the water or dragonflies working the reeds. The real heart of the place is the Wilts & Berks Canal and its lock – a piece of engineering infrastructure that belongs firmly to the area's transport heritage. The towpath lets you walk that history directly, watching water move through the lock system while the sounds of resident birdlife provide a constant soundtrack.
The canal is actively being restored in sections, so you're visiting somewhere very much in the process of revival. This isn't somewhere to tick off quickly. It works better as a gentle walk, a spot for birdwatching, or simply an hour spent sitting by the water. The meadow is well-positioned relative to Wantage, the market town lying a short distance away, making it a natural addition to a wider exploration of the surrounding area.
