You're standing at an Iron Age hillfort, one of several ancient defensive settlements that dot this part of England. What makes it particularly satisfying to visit is how clearly the earthworks remain visible – you can still make out the defensive ditches and banks that once protected the people living here thousands of years ago.
From the top, you can gaze out across the Severn Vale towards the distant Malvern Hills, and eastward over the rolling Cotswold valleys and the market town of Stroud. It's an excellent spot for walking, whether you're following the Cotswold Way which passes nearby, or just taking a leisurely stroll to soak in the views. A 2005 restoration project has helped preserve these important archaeological features and keep them accessible, ensuring visitors can properly experience what makes this such a significant historical site.
Once you've finished exploring, Painswick village is just a short walk down the hill – perfect for grabbing a coffee or wandering around its famous churchyard. Stroud is also very close by if you're after more shops and facilities, so you can easily fit this into a broader day out in the area.
