Standing at the heart of Gloucester where Northgate, Southgate, Eastgate, and Westgate converge, this monument occupies one of the city's most important crossroads.
The spot itself has significance stretching back to Roman times, when Glevum's four main roads met exactly here. For centuries, this junction has been where Gloucester's civic life, commerce, and public gatherings have taken place.
What you see today is a Victorian reconstruction from the mid-1860s, designed to reflect the grandeur of the medieval market cross that originally stood here. The monument features intricate carved details and statues of various monarchs and significant figures, each connected to Gloucester's important royal charters and historical development. It's an excellent spot to pause, orient yourself, and understand how the city is organised.
The Cross remains very much alive in local life—locals still arrange to meet friends here, so you'll find it genuinely busy rather than merely historical. From this central point, Gloucester Cathedral is a short walk away down Westgate Street. Heading east through the shopping centre leads towards the historic Gloucester Docks. The High Cross serves as an ideal starting point for exploring the city, offering a tangible connection from its Roman foundations through to the busy city life you'll find today.
