The Golden Fleece is a traditional pub in Stroud, a working market town in the Forest of Dean area of Gloucestershire.
You'll find it's the kind of place that gives you a genuine feel for local life, well away from the more touristy villages you encounter further north in the Cotswolds.
As a former coaching inn, the pub has real character with exposed beams and an authentically old-fashioned interior. Real ales are always on tap, usually featuring local brews from independent regional breweries, and the food is solid pub fare—hearty, traditional, and unpretentious. What really sets it apart is the atmosphere. It's genuinely frequented by locals rather than designed with visitors in mind, and that's exactly what many people come for.
Stroud itself is worth exploring if you're passing through. The town has a strong textile heritage and a thriving independent shopping scene, with vintage and artisan shops concentrated around the town center. The countryside around here is excellent for walking, particularly if you head toward the Five Valleys. You're about twenty minutes from Gloucester and have decent public transport connections, so it's accessible whether you're using the train or driving.
The Golden Fleece works particularly well as a base if you're spending time in Stroud itself, rather than staying in some of the better-known villages like Painswick or Bourton-on-the-Water.
