This walking route takes you through open countryside in the heart of the Cotswolds, centered on the village of Coleshill.
You'll follow the meandering River Cole as it winds through rolling fields and woodlands, offering a genuine sense of stepping away from everyday life into a quieter landscape. It's the kind of walk where you'll have a real chance to notice local wildlife and breathe in the proper fresh air of the region.
The area carries considerable historical weight. The land around Coleshill was part of the Coleshill Estate, which held a secret significance during the Second World War. This is where the Auxiliary Units, known as 'Churchill's Secret Army' or the 'British Resistance', trained intensively in readiness for a potential German invasion. As you walk, you may encounter remnants of this past, and the National Trust, who manage much of the estate, have set up information points to help you understand what happened here.
The walk works equally well as a short leisurely stroll or a longer hike depending on your mood and energy. Sturdy shoes are worth bringing, as some paths can be uneven underfoot. When you need a break, Faringdon lies a short drive away with its market town amenities, shops, and pubs. Lechlade-on-Thames is another nearby option if you're drawn to riverside settings.
