The Cloisters is a historic manor house in Manton, a small village just outside Marlborough in the Wiltshire section of the Cotswolds.
Though it's a private residence, it's worth seeing for the quality of its architecture—the kind of skilled building work you'll spot throughout this area that tells you something genuine about the region's history. You can view it from the village lanes, and that's actually the best part of visiting. Walking around Manton itself gives you a real sense of how these villages function, with their quiet roads and the kind of traditional character that's become quite rare.
Marlborough is only a short drive away and pairs well with a visit to Manton. The town has genuine energy to it, built around one of England's widest high streets where independent shops line both sides. You'll find local food producers, antique dealers, and plenty of good restaurants and cafes scattered about. If you're hungry for a bit more activity after the peace of the village, Marlborough's the place to spend an hour or two. Together, Manton and Marlborough give you a realistic picture of this part of the Cotswolds—not just the famous spots, but the actual texture of how the area works and where people live and shop.
