This route, part of the longer Thames & Severn Way, offers a real blend of history and natural beauty without being overly strenuous. Following the old towpath, you'll be tracing a significant piece of 18th-century engineering that once connected London's River Thames with the River Severn, effectively linking east and west England for trade.

The real highlight here is approaching the Sapperton Tunnel. While you can't walk through it, the path takes you right up to its impressive portals or, for a longer route, over the hill above it, offering a unique perspective on this remarkable feat of engineering for its era – one of the longest canal tunnels ever built at the time. As you walk, look out for the old locks and bridges, and enjoy the peaceful waterway, which is now being lovingly restored by volunteers. It's a great spot for a gentle stroll, often flat and easy underfoot, through classic Cotswold countryside and light woodland.

After your walk, you're just a short drive from Cirencester, the Capital of the Cotswolds, perfect for a meal or a browse. The village of Sapperton itself is also worth a look, known for its Arts and Crafts heritage.
